If you want a happy kid, get them a hammock. There are a lot of great options out there for kids hammocks, so let’s break it down and compare them side-by-side, so your little one can safely sway the day away.

Hammocks are quite safe. Well, some are. Those big backyard hammocks with a spreader bar made from rope with large gaps? Not really those. Even I have a hard time balancing and not falling out of them.

Gather end hammocks, on the other hand, are a lot easier to get in and out of and much safer for kids. They don’t require nearly as much finesse or stillness, and really do not flip that easily, especially if hung low to the ground for easy entrance and dismount. Just kidding, no dismount required. This isn’t gymnastics.

There are several options when it comes to the best hammocks for kids. There are fancy hammocks for the house, sleepy-time hammocks for the crib, or cozy shopping cart hammock seats (yes, please).

Since we specialize in outdoor gear, we’re going to focus on portable, parachute style hammocks designed specifically for children. Note: you could full well get a full-size hammock for your kids, but who are we to tell you what to do? Besides, we agree, miniature hammocks are just so darn cute.

best hammock for kids Wise Owl Outfitters kids hammock

Wise Owl Outfitters

Wise Owl is a great choice for a well-made, affordable hammock. We own one and love it. Bonus, the team there is also super friendly and responsive, and has always been an enthusiastic supporter of HammockLiving.

Color options

The Wise Owl Owlet Kids Hammock comes in three color combinations: pink and lavender, kelly green and cobalt blue, and cloud blue and tangerine.

Hanging the hammock

The hammock comes with heavy duty D-shape carabiners attached at both ends (as most do), as well as two 9-foot ropes to hang it up. Note these ropes are not quite as handy as straps with pre-made loops, but it’s pretty simple to tie a durable knot and get hanging in a matter of minutes. Since we love trees, we must also point out that ropes like these are not as easy on the tree trunks as wider straps are. Thin ropes can cut into the bark and potentially danger the tree. We prefer wider straps for ease of hang and tree comfort, and they’re not expensive to buy separately.

Hammock material

The hammock is made with 210T parachute nylon material, as are most camping hammocks. This is the same material used in parachutes—hence the name. We figure if it’s good enough for skydivers, it’s good enough for us and our kids. It’s a soft and comfortable material that can really take a beating. It doesn’t rip or tear easily, so rough kids won’t have a problem climbing in and out.

Size and weight

This is a light and compact hammock that’s perfect for kids. It clocks in at 6-feet long and 3.5-feet wide and weighs just 13 ounces. It packs down to the size of an orange.

It’s made for kids up to the ages of 11 or 12, then you can advance for a SingleOwl (for one person) or DoubleOwl (for two).

Warranty

Wise Owl offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Who is this hammock for?

This is a great option for anyone looking for a well-made hammock with a satisfaction guarantee at an affordable price. If you need something that will last and is easily transportable for whatever adventures you and your kids go on, this is a solid choice. This hammock has more than 200 five-star reviews on Amazon, so not much of a risk here.

best hammock for kids Hennessy Hammock cub asym zip kids hammock

Hennessy Hammock

Hennessy Hammock makes hands-down the best, most durable “survivalist” gear. Every hammock come with attached no-see-um mesh nets for added protection from bugs and detachable rainflies to keep you dry. It’s what sets them apart from all the other hammock companies, and it’s why they cost a little more. If you’ll be hammock camping or hiking, or spending any amount of time in wet or buggy conditions, this hammock is well worth the investment.

The Cub has all the same patented features as any other Hennessy Hammock, including the signature asymmetrical shape and structural ridgeline to help ensure a perfect setup and maximum comfort.

The asymmetrical design helps you lay diagonal inside the hammock, which gives optimal comfort and the most support for your back and knees.

The ridgeline helps ensure the same hammock shape every time you set up, no matter how far apart the trees happen to be. It helps keep the spape and curve of the hammock in tact with every hang.

Color options

Hennessy Hammock doesn’t bother with crazy prints or festive colors. These utilitarian hammocks come in its standard hunter green with a hunter green fly and black trim.

Hanging the hammock

Hennessy makes is easy and includes both suspending support ropes and webbing straps to hang from trees. The polyester straps are 42″ (3.5 feet), which doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room in terms of how far apart your trees can be, but you can always attach a second strap or use longer straps. Hennessy’s “Tree Hugger” straps are 1,5″ wide, which are on the wider side and definitely help protect the trees’ bark.

Hammock material

This hammock is made from 70d nylon taffeta fabric. The rainfly is a 70d polyurethane coated polyester ripstop. The mosquito mesh is a 30d polyester no-see-um netting.

Size and weight

This is the heaviest hammock on the list, considering it includes the weight of the attached mesh net and detachable rainfly. The whole kit and caboodle weighs in at 33 ounces, or 2 lbs 1 oz. This weight does not include the webbing straps, which are super light at 3 oz.

The hammock is 9′ long and 4′ 10″ wide. It packs down to 9″ x 7″ x 4″.

It is rated to hold up to 120 lbs and best for kids up to 5’4″ tall.

Warranty

Hennessy Hammock offers a guarantee again defects in materials and workmanship for one year.

Who is this hammock for?

Since it’s designed for rain-or-shine outdoor use with extra protection that none of the other hammocks offer, this is an ideal option for anyone going hammock camping or hiking with their kids. If you’re headed out in a buggy area or there’s a chance of rain, this is definitely the best option for your family and worth the extra money.

best kids hammocks Darod hammock

Darod

We aren’t familiar with this hammock company and have never tried it personally. However, we’re including it on this list because a) it’s a hammock specifically made for kids and that’s what this list is, b) it has a decent Amazon rating of 4.5 stars currently with 79 reviews, and c) it just might be the best bet if you’re on a budget since it comes with straps.

Color options

Not a ton of options here. Just one, actually. The Darod Kids hammock comes in pale blue with a grey trim, so somewhat limiting if your kid doesn’t like blue.

Hanging the hammock

This hammock comes with straps that have 16 loops. It’s unclear whether that’s each strap or both straps combined, but we assume it’s 8 on each. There’s no indication of how long each strap is.

Hammock material

The Darod is made of 210T nylon.

Size and weight

It’s a mid-weight hammock at 22 ounces and can hold up to 400 pounds.

The hammock is 6′ long and 3′ 6″ wide.

Warranty

Darod offers a five-year customer satisfaction warranty. Note: as far as we could find, the company doesn’t exist online and only sells this one hammock through Amazon, so… purchase at your own risk?

Who is this hammock for?

This could be good for anyone on a budget since it comes with straps and  is ready to go right out of the box. Even if the company doesn’t really exist, it’s not a huge investment, so it seems like a nice option if you want to keep costs down.

best hammock for kids Browint kids hammock

Browint

Okay, we’re at the end of the list, and here’s what we know about Browint: they sell super cheap outdoor gear via Amazon only. We aren’t personally vouching for this company but wanted to include here since they have some fun prints, making this the only hammock with prints and not just solid colors for kids, woo hoo!

We’ll let you decide if you’re willing to pay a little extra for a fun design when the product currently has a handful of reviews (though all five stars).

Color options

The Browint Kids Hammock comes in 5 fun patterns, including nautical, animal kingdom, Caribbean, fruits, and what they call a princess garden design that looks to have butterflies, cats, and such. All things some kid would love.

Who is this hammock for?

This hammock is for anyone who values looks and is willing to pay a little extra for a fun print that your kids will love. Or, for adults (since it’s the length of an adult hammock) with a childlike spirit.
